As the investigators spoke with Nathan in the lobby of the theater away from the rest of the cast and crew, Hannah couldn’t help but notice that the director had a nervous fidget to him.

Nathan was a heavyset man, which was an oddity amongst the theater crowd.

Most of the cast and crew had an unhealthy skinniness to them.

Like they all needed to eat a hamburger every once in a while.

Not Nathan.

His round figure, oval face, thick beard, and long hair made him really stand out.

“What do you have to say for yourself?” Tyler asked.

“I didn’t do it,” Nathan said.

“Then why do you seem so antsy?” Tyler asked.

“It’s just this nervous tic I have.”

“What are you nervous about? Unless you’re hiding something from us.”

“Have you ever been questioned by the police before?”

“No.”

“Well, guess what? It’s nerve-wracking. Even when you’ve done nothing wrong.”

“I can imagine. Just answer our questions honestly—”

“And what? You’ll let me go?” Nathan asked. “I’ve watched enough true crime documentaries to know that the police sometimes make mistakes. Really big ones that cost innocent people their freedom.”

“Nathan, your paranoia isn’t helping anyone,” Tyler said. “We’re not the enemy here.”

“Neither am I,” Nathan said. “I’m just looking out for myself. No one else will.”

“Can we just get to our questions?”

“Fine.”

“We understand there’s been a lot of drama behind-the-scenes between you and Paul. What do you have to say about that?”

“See. This is why I was nervous for this interview. We’re one question in and you’re already trying to stir up trouble.”

“That’s not what’s happening. Stop trying to change the subject and answer my question.”

“So we had some disagreements. That’s what happens sometimes when you’re trying to make great art. It wasn’t personal.”

“Are you sure it wasn’t?” Tyler asked.

Nathan nodded his head. “Yes. It was just business.”

“That statement doesn’t exonerate you nearly as much as you think it does. You both had a lot riding on this play. You were hoping for a successful run that would propel your career to new heights. The constant clashes with Paul probably had you seeing red. When it came to this play…and the forecast for your future.”

“Look. I know where you’re going with this and you have the wrong idea about me.”

“Is this the part where you tell us we shouldn’t suspect you? That despite the fact that you were at each other’s throats, you would never kill him?” Tyler said.

“Exactly. I’m not a murderer,” Nathan said.

“That’s what they all say,” Tyler replied.

Nathan groaned. “I realize things don’t look great for me—”

“Great?” Tyler laughed. “They look downright awful.”

“Maybe so. But here’s the thing. Appearances can be deceiving.”

“Sometimes. Other times, they are spot-on.”

“You’re so busy focusing on the arguments that Paul and I had that you’re missing a key point,” Nathan said.

“Which is?” Tyler asked.

“That I had nothing to gain from killing him,” Nathan said.

“Sure you did. With Paul out of the picture, the arguing would finally stop and this play could go off without a hitch.”

“True. But it would also probably open and close to lackluster reviews and little fanfare.
